Racket Update September 2021
This month, Racket has been in contact with Asylee Women Enterprise, an organization that "journeys with asylum seekers and other forced migrants as they navigate the immigration legal process, begin to heal from past trauma and rebuild their lives in Baltimore." AWE is currently working with the U.S. State Department to sponsor Afghan women on humanitarian parole, and coordinating efforts to support them as they flee the oppression of Taliban rule.
"Afghan girls and young women are once again where I have been — in despair over the thought that they might never be allowed to see a classroom or hold a book again," writes Malala Yousafzai in the New York Times. "Some members of the Taliban say they will not deny women and girls education or the right to work. But given the Taliban’s history of violently suppressing women’s rights, Afghan women’s fears are real. Already, we are hearing reports of female students being turned away from their universities, female workers from their offices."
Racket remains committed to the full societal participation of women, girls, and people who menstruate. We believe that the ability to take care of one's period is a basic human right, and is necessary to facilitate equal participation in school and in the workplace. To that end, we are grateful for organizations such as AWE for their efforts to aid Afghan women and girls, and eager to support them in their work with a donation of menstrual hygiene supplies.
In the coming weeks, Racket will also be sending supplies for those affected by the earthquake in Haiti, and fulfilling our promise to match the 6,553 maxipads collected in a drive hosted by Ma'i Movement Hawai'i. If you're looking for a way to support these humanitarian efforts, please consider donating to Racket via the church's website. Select Racket under "Fund".
