From the Interim Rector - 6/4
Walls are going up. Not metaphorically. Literally. The interior walls of our new church building are going up. As you walk the various floors you can now get a very real understanding of how the space will work, how all those many, many lines on those many, many, many pages of architectural drawings translate into walls and rooms and stairs and all the rest. The building is still very raw, but we are now at the point where the vision God planted in the heart and life of Epiphany is being realized in steel and wood, concrete and gypsum.
The question that is the ever-present and whose answer is constantly changing based on the realities on the ground is, when will the building be completed and we will move? As you may remember the original answer was May 31, 2021. Yes, we were to have been in the new building by now. I’m sure you have read enough of the updates over this last year to know that between the Covid-19 shutdown, the plethora of unforeseen conditions we encountered during demolition that required redesigns, additional shoring, and all the rest, that date became completely unrealistic. Given our current understanding of the building and where we are in the project, our Construction Manager’s latest estimate is spring of 2022.
Below this article you will see a series of photos I’ve taken over the last number of weeks and months that will show you where we are in this massively complex project. But first, here are some of the latest milestones.
Nearly all of the new windows are installed.
The frames for the new stained glass windows are nearly all installed.
The roof of the Nave is 50% removed and being prepared for the installation of a new standing seam roof.
The new stained glass windows are nearing completion at Rohlf Studios.
Structural steel is being installed.
The elevator car is complete and ready for installation when the time comes.
As mentioned in an earlier update, the south façade restoration is basically complete. Just a few last details before the scaffolding comes down.
The east, north, and south facades are scaffolded and ready for repair and repainting.
Mechanical (HVAC), electrical, and plumbing is actively being installed.
There is still an immense amount of work left to be done as you will see from the photos below, yet as I said above, we’re turned the corner on this project and are now building out the space to support the future life, mission and ministry of the Church of the Epiphany for generations to come. As can often happen in life, the full realization of a dream may get delayed for any number of reasons, however, the dream continues to be alive and is being achieved, day by day. I can’t count how many times I have heard someone say to me, “Good things come to those who wait.” We’ve all heard it, and perhaps even said it. And so, we wait a little longer. And, give thanks to God for the good things that even now come to us as we await that final day when we will stand in our new church and sing out our Alleluias!
Faithfully yours,
Roy+
